Stigma Around Teen Parents

The results of the multivariate analysis of variance comparisons of the items showed that the mother was the subject of both positive and negative attention. Unmarried teen mothers were perceived as more sexually promiscuous and too young to be parents than unmarried teen fathers. However, women were also perceived as being more responsible and spending a large amount of time with their children. Teen fathers who are not married were perceived to be much more ambitious, whereas respondents believed that it was more crucial for moms to pursue their education. The findings support the notion that teen moms who are not married are expected to shoulder a disproportionate share of the responsibility of caring for their kids.
